From the Grave: Please Don’t Publish Until I’m Gone 100 Years.

Mark’s Twain Autobiography was published after a wait of 100 years. By doing this, he could freely speak his mind and strike vengeance as he saw fit “from the grave.”

A fiction writer may also create but not consciously publish various works during their lifetime for the following reasons:

  • A fear of criticism on release.
  • The work is incomplete or not satisfactory.
  • The work covers a controversial subject.
  • A promise to keep family members happy.
  • The work is an indictment of a real situation and real names are mentioned or are very thinly veiled.

So a growing “post-bucket” collection may result. But this is accompanied by a set of risks. If this is a digital set, then there is the ongoing concern over a malicious hacker retrieving and publishing it. Or if it is a physical work, there is a need to hide it in a secure or an unobvious place. However, every time that you use the surreptitious repository, there is a good possibility of your “literary stash” being detected.

To relieve the tension, some authors may release a few of these works under pseudonyms. But there is a high risk of doing this in the information age because eventually the truth will come out.

And as a last resort, perhaps never write these stories down. Instead, keep it part of your “mental inventory.” And when you emit your breath, the secret will die quietly with you.

How will you choose to handle this need? The choices are yours alone and need to be made carefully. Good luck with this effort!

Build a Writer’s Journey Roadmap

Whether you a writer that started young or later in life, you need a way to track your progress.

One way of doing this is a Writer’s Journey’s Roadmap. This can be listed in a table of placed in a graphical format.

Items that you want to include are:

* Writing inspirations and influences (Authors, works, personal and news events)

* Lessons learned from each work (What worked well. What were experiments? What were the challenges? What would you do differently now based on hindsight?)

* Techniques used (Style, genres, words, characters, plots, locations, etc.)

* Future challenges (What do you really want to be good at ? What would be a fun work to write?

By doing this, you can see your writing career or ant-career at a glance on one paper.

I would be interested in hearing how doing this worked for you.

Eight Reasons Why Saving Eddie is Different

I recently completed Saving Eddie, a fictionalized paranormal retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s life. This is different from any of my other books for the following reasons:

  1. It crosses genres. The book is a biographical mystery with romantic and paranormal elements. It attempts to seamlessly merge these elements together.
  2. It uses unique plot devices. It is based on Arthur Rimbaud’s idea of a “season” covering the key periods in Poe’s life. The book is mostly told through two imaginary journals including one of Edgar’s mostly unknown real-life brother Henry. Henry also is deciding throughout the book when would be best to save his brother’s life.
  3. It provides a different perspective on Poe’s life. There are many different books on this great author. But few are written from the perspective on why he could so clearly describe the ideals of beauty and the depths of human madness. It provides a theory on the disastrous consequences of his being constantly in debt. Some of his lesser known works are also highlighted.
  4. It is well-researched. Diving into primary resources as well as visiting many of the places where he resided made this the most researched book that I have done to date.
  5. It uses lengthy chapters. Typically I write short chapters. However, in this case, a chapter was written for each “season” of Edgar’s life. Using the “one long take” approach allows the reader to better understand the ups and downs of that period.
  6. Use of unreliable narrators. The two journal writers in the story are caught up with their own emotional biases and may make misleading judgments. Along the way, you watch them both grow.
  7. A preview copy and cover was released early. It had the most downloads in the shortest period of time of all my book samples.
  8. It is not a retread. Another author could have made this a rehash of Killing Thoreau with time travel. But I decided to go into unfamiliar and more challenging territory instead.

This was a highly satisfactory experience that I hope you have as much fun reading as I did creating,

Why “Saving Eddie” is Different

After completing the powerful and dynamic Corporate Intent Series, I needed a follow-up before diving into the final two Olivia Plymouth books. The answer came while watching a video on Edgar Allan Poe’s life. I would write an alternate paranormal retelling of this original writer. How to do it took longer to figure out. Telling it from the viewpoint of his ghostly brother and a female admirer that watches Poe mostly from afar would be the viewpoints used.

Saving Eddie is different and more challenging than anything else that I have done:

Using Arthur Rimbaud’s idea of a season corresponds to one chapter. So this meant longer chapters that had to be self-contained stories. Having a “partially omniscient” narrator being Henry Poe also solved many issues. There are gaps in Poe’s life that allowed for original scenes. Using the paranormal also nicely explains some of the whys in Poe’s life.

I am having a lot of fun writing this. You can read the initial chapters at GoodReads

2013 So Far

I want to begin by mentioning you the reader for your support and making this a great year! Readers from over 41 countries are downloading/purchasing these works and enjoying them. Thank you!!!

So far, five works have been released this year:

The rest of the year should be working on the following:

  • Missing Owner? (Corporate Intent Series Book 2) . This is in Edit.
  • A book of short stories. Four stories are already planned.
  • The Archive Project — placing many early stories in digital form. At this time, there are no plans to release any of these. This will take some time to
    do.
  • To Be Named (Corporate Intent Series Book 4)
  • Happy reading this Summer and I will provide more updates soon

What’s Planned for 2013?

This is the second in a series of year-end/year start blogs. The year in review was covered here.

2013 should be a productive year of publishing. I have two books from last year that are almost done with editing:

  1. Olivia Plymouth: Misadventures in Boston: From running in the Boston marathon, taking on FIT (Fashion Is Terror), solving a colonial mystery, helping with sister’s Rose wedding, or fitting time in for her boyfriend, Olivia is a busy young woman! How she deals with it all makes for an amusing and captivating story.
  2. Corporate Intent: Missing Owner?: My fastest-selling series goes deeper into this futuristic world of dysfunctional corporations presented as a mystery thriller. Someone is stealing the owner’s of various businesses. Then they take over the business and run it into the ground. Can the DCRI investigation team sift through the untruths and subterfuges to solve what is really taking place?

Currently, I am writing what could be the last in the Corporate Intent series (depending on reader interest) — Missing Company? Could the life that you thought you had disappear in a minute and look as if it never happened? The DCRI team has never thought so out of the box to solve a mystery before — a mystery that has galactic implications!

That are the commitments so far. What is being considered is the following:

  1. Publishing a unfinished work on IT which was written as the same time as the Olivia series.
  2. Write a collection of short stories. This may include samples from earlier unpublished works.
  3. Continue on with the Olivia Plymouth and Amazi series.

That covers it for now. I am wishing all my readers throughout the world a happy, safe, and productive 2013.

The Year in Review

This is one of two year-end blogs. The first one is to look at what was done this year. The next one is on what is planned for 2013.

In May, my first work was released on Wikinut “Laboratory of the Ego“. This is an experimental piece about a man that lives with three roommates that we all see everyday — Greed, Hatred, and Delusion.

Later that month, the free prequel in the Amazi Series was released How I Overcame My Inventor’s Block.” It can be downloaded here. This story details the life of an incredible young woman learning the rules of invention in 19th century Austria. It is my most popular work to date.

This was followed in June by the first book in the series, Automatons for Peace. The story shifts to early 20th New York City where three inventors create a series of unique inventions such as the 4 element motor.

That same month, a prequel story in the Olivia Plymouth series was released. It covers the life of an unusual fashion consultant that takes on way too much including managing fashion shows, solving age-old mysteries, and finding time to spend her boyfriend, Joyous Travel with the Wrong Suitcase.

In July, the first book in the series came out. In Brazilian Quest, Olivia tries to solve a 60 year old mystery while consulting in a fashion show. Along the way, we learn about the sights and sounds of Northeastern Brazil.

In October, an entirely different type of series was released — Corporate Intent. This is a futuristic mystery thriller on dysfunctional corporations where anything can happen. Book #1 is Missing Employees?

Between July and year end, the following also took place:

  1. Created Corporate Intent #2: Missing Owner? (A sample chapter is included at the end of book #1)
  2. Edited the lengthy Olivia Plymouth Book #2: Misadventures in Boston.
  3. Creating Corporate Intent #3: Missing Company?
  4. Deciding what to publish in 2013.
  5. Creating Audio versions of sample chapters and stories.
